The Indian fashion industry is facing renewed scrutiny after model Roshni Sharma took to Instagram to share her candid experience of low wages and exhausting work schedules. In her post, Sharma revealed that models are often paid just ₹15,000–₹20,000 a day — a sum that may sound substantial at first glance but, she stressed, comes after walking in 3–4 shows and being on set or backstage for over 12 hours.
Her comments have ignited conversations about fair pay, labour conditions, and the gap between the glamorous image of modelling and its behind-the-scenes realities. Sharma pointed out that these earnings don’t factor in the significant expenses models bear — from travel and accommodation to grooming and wardrobe maintenance.
Many in the industry and outside have applauded her for speaking up, saying her post sheds light on a systemic issue where creative professionals are undervalued despite contributing to high-profile events and campaigns.
While some fashion insiders defended current pay structures as “market standard,” others called for urgent reform to ensure better compensation and work-life balance for models. Sharma’s revelations have opened the door for deeper discussions on equity, transparency, and dignity in the Indian fashion world.
