Overview of Consumer Sentiment

The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index revealed an adjustment for April 2025, with a revised figure of 52.2, a notable increase from a preliminary reading of 50.8. However, this represents a decline compared to March’s figure of 57. This downward trend marks the fourth consecutive month of falling consumer sentiment, reaching its lowest point since July 2022.

Economic Perspectives

Despite the upward revision, consumers express increasing caution about the economy. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding trade policies and the potential resurgence of inflation significantly impact perceptions. The expectations gauge dropped to 47.3, the lowest level since July 2022, reflecting growing concerns about future economic conditions.

Inflation Expectations on the Rise

Inflation expectations have also become a concerning point. The year-ahead inflation expectation surged to 6.5%, marking the highest level since 1981, influenced by recent trade policy announcements. Even though this figure is slightly lower than the preliminary estimate of 6.7%, long-term inflation expectations have risen from 4.1% to 4.4%, indicating that consumers remain wary of the sustained impact of inflation on their financial well-being.
